I’ve been learning characters since the beginning and this feels like a massive step backwards. This is a community for people studying or teaching Chinese – or even if you’re just interested in the languages of China.
Textbook Review: Beginning Chinese Reader (John DeFrancis) : ChineseLanguage
Beginninng been impressed enough that I’ll probably continue through the whole series. The whole original series is in traditional characters both 1st and 2nd editions. Princess Villaflores rated it it was amazing Sep 07, When Vefrancis got it, it was in better condition than the one I bought new, and 2 unopened DVDs were bound into the spine.
But as the books are packed away in a closet somewhere, I can’t quote you chapter and verse. I agree, as I said before, that any textbook can be used alongside the readers.
First, for some background: I eagerly tore into it but found that it’s all in pinyin. I will add a comment on it tomorrow. Other books in this series. While Beginning Chinese Reader was primarily intended as a complement to the Beginning Chinese textbook also by DeFrancis, it can stand alone as a work.

I have been given refunds, free books, or a better copy to make things right when I complained about something. There are others here who use only the readers and do just fine. Beginning Chinese Reader, Part 1
In each lesson, DeFrancis introduces about ten characters, gives their pronunciation sgives a good number of compound words using the characters. Ethelion marked it as to-read Mar 19, Sign In Sign Chineese.
I use the reader without the textbook, although when I started I was already at a lower intermediate stage. But that’s your choice to make.
