Oh, I love this story. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Did you struggle with it?
May 14, Julianna rated it it was ok Shelves: The plot is intricate and clever, the uncovering of it interesting and ingenious. It’s a historical and it features a so called bad boy with a heart of gold, and those are things I love, but for a good part of the story the heroine spends married to someone other than the apparent love of her live.
Even though the evil husband could have been killed by anybody under the sun, they conveniently focus on 5 people from their circle because “their instincts told them to” and don’t seem to investigate anybody nighh.
After Beaumont loses his blackmail ring, he and Leila flee to England, but his situation only worsens until the day he’s found murdered, a poison-laced bottle of laudanum at his side.
The two of them are required to collaborate on the investigation, something they both dislike, but that brings them close and makes it hard for them to resist the attraction between them. The Comte D’Esmond is actually the villain in Chase’s earlier novel, The Lion’s Daughterwhere as a ruthless Albanian prince, he not only tries to usurp his cousin, the Pasha, but becomes obsessed with the daughter of an English nobleman and chases her and the man she loves across Europe, intent on stealing her back.
Captives of the Night (Scoundrels, #2) by Loretta Chase
What would have made this romance irresistible? She frequently acted like a spoiled, temperamental, and generally unpleasant woman who was given to throwing tantrums. Where did you go to school? I despised the main character Ismael in the first book; but this book simply exemplifies the fact that we all grow and change.
As I mentioned, the middle sags a bit, but the book still works far more than it doesn’t. Fabulous, witty writing, wonderful characters, plots, chemistry, and of course, romance. Cchase had been the villain of the previous book, The Lion’s Daughterin which he had done some very bad things, including trying to overthrow his cousin, the leader of Albania although he was a very distasteful character himself and completely obsessing over the heroine of that story to the point of kidnapping and threatening to rape her.
The mystery I didn’t even see what was coming! Instead, Leila makes her excuses and rushes home. I think I’ll just begin the series with book 2 in the future. Why I read this? A difficult task, as the list of suspects is long. But chse series with Kate Reading narrating is simply too special to not mention, with words and rating.
Even as he wants to seduce her and win her love, he is terrified that the intelligent and dangerously perceptive woman will figure out the secrets of his past, and how he may have been the person to set her on the path to her disastrous marriage to Francis in the first place.
Captives of the Night
This was a good but not great read. If I hadn’t experienced it, I wouldn’t have believed it was possible. Captives of the Night is my favorite romance novel of all time, and Kate Reading’s performance of the book makes it ten times better. Esmond can’t afford the distraction of an entanglement, however passionate it promises to be. Esmond subdues the desire to give into the temptation Leila represents, but is simultaneously driven to know and understand her, to provoke the passionate nature she conceals even while recognizing that it will lead to his own undoing.
Leila Beaumont, nee Bridgeburton.
Desert Isle Keeper
Some discussion of her not being a wanton and it being her husband’s fault would have been nice to see, I’m just saying hide spoiler ] I’m pretty sure I’m not as smart as I think I am because I did actually have trouble keeping up with the twists and turns of it.
If Leila weren’t such an unrelieved bitch, I cgase given a shit what happened to her and might’ve wondered if they eventually worked it out.
This is what I have been missing from today’s historical romance. It was there lorett she met a video producer who inspired her to write novels and marry him. Although I have some serious reservations at this point, I will in all likelihood read loregta final book, The Last Hellionat some point just for the sake of completeness.
There is too much of a mystery element to the story and the romance is probably the most angst-filled of all of Loretta Chase ‘s books.
My favorite Chase book ever! A great listen after The Lord of scoundrels I decided to get another one of Loretta Chase’s books once I was finished with Lord of scoundrels.
Beaumont’s trade in dark, dirty secrets means a public investigation is impossible, so, to Leila’s discomfiture, Esmond is called in to discover who murdered Beaumont and why.
