Doubt is still a fantastic read, and I’m certainly going to read more of Shanley’s plays, but I wish there was a bit more to this play. In a private meeting purportedly regarding the Christmas pageantAloysius, in the presence of Sister James, openly confronts Flynn with her suspicions.
A Parable is a short and elegantly simple play about that most troubling of emotions. Maybe I just wanted more of it. Zeal describes Sister Aloysius also – but zeal of a different sort.

Shanley is not content to give us an ending with Father Flynn quietly removed from the parish. But he leaves all those issues for us to think about and decide. And just when you think the play is only a criticism of pedophilia in the church, it also manages to touch upon race relations in the s, homosexuality, and the tension dubt social change and traditional structure.
