Atatürk: The Rebirth of a Nation – Patrick Kinross – Google Books

Still the best biography of the founder of modern Turkey. I reread this because Erdogan and the AKP party are trying to undo most of the reforms introduced by Ataturk and revert Turkey to an Islamic, neo-Ottoman, mediocrity. I spent three years in Izmir as an exchange officer with the Turkish Air Force and grew to love Turkey and the Turkish peoples. I grieve than Westernized Izmir is now referred to as “Infidel Izmir” and a recent survey indicated that 73 percent of Turks were now anti-American.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The book was quite a nice read. Have not read other bios of Ataturk, but I found this very well written bio. The political maneuvering portions of the book were tedious at times, but most of the book, especially the military campaigns were real page turners.

Ataturk moved and led Turkey as few have ever led nation. Asian history education is blank slate in our country. My degree in history stopped somewhere a mile east of Athens.

My lack of understanding of Turkey’s leap from monarchy to republic is nicely stitched together with a study of Ataturk. Some knowledge of the divisiveness of the current Mideast is expanded as well. Ataturk may have moved and led Turkey as few have ever led nation.

He and his party yanked the rag doll that was Turkey onto the path of growth into nationhood. I would have added a personality for womanizing and another for heroic alcohol consumption if someone would have come to mind.

Thumbnail sketch of his accomplishments: I have been to Turkey a couple of times and I was always astonished by the constant presence of Ataturk face in enormous banners all over the place.

It seemed to me that this could be an ordinary case of self-imposed cult of personality that endured generations.

eebirth Fortunately, I came across this magnificent book by Sir Patrick Kinross, which clarified the whole matter to me. A good summary is given by this paragraph taken from the prologue: For some time after WWI, Turkey or better saying, the Ottoman Empire was in real danger of being sliced in the same way several other countries were, especially in what is known as scramble for Africa.

Mustafa Kemal was the person who blocked the whole process, initiating a small nationalist movement, aggregating support and finally becoming the de facto government of the country. He was the real engine of the transformation of Turkey from a medieval-like empire to a modern country. In the process, he had to change almost every aspect of people’s life, going from economy and politics to culture and education.

Atatürk : the rebirth of a nation (Book, ) []

The book tells the whole story of Kemal’s life and as a consequence the history of the beginning of the Turkish republic. What I liked most is the fact that the author is unbiased; he shows all the qualities of the man, general and leader but also his flaws.

In the end, we get the impression that Ataturk was a brilliant human being, but nonetheless human. Finally, one issue that is always present in the book is the struggle of Ataturk against the old traditions that he thought could damage the progress of the nation. One of the main points was the importance of the secular state and the book recounts all the steps he took to isolate the State from the influence of religion.

In this sense, this is an important source to understand what is happening in Turkey nowadays, since it seems exactly that this division is being discussed in strong terms. This book was an excellent study of the history of Turkey which gave the reader a clear view of the role played by Ataturk in and following WWI.

As an American reader, this was the portion I most understood and to which I related; but the book is a thorough story of the life of a 20th Century major figure ntaion adequately appreciated in the west.

Since I have lived in Turkey for the past seven years, it was natural I would aaturk to add to my knowledge of the man, his era nqtion the places involved in his rise to leadership; however, the book was recommended to me by a national friend.

Interestingly, she is the granddaughter of an informal advisor to Ataturk whose death came as a result of Ataturk’s inaction, more than deliberate plan, a fact recorded in the book. Strangely she still extols the virtue of the man and his leadership. Ataturk’s historical image in Turkey best parallels that of Geoorge Washington in the US and is depicted as such in the book.
